Flipped Classroom

Picture
Is the most helpful place for a professor up in the front of the classroom conducting a one way lecture with powerpoint slides?
Likely not.
We know that people learn best by applying, discussing and practicing concepts. In a traditional model, time in class is spent with the professor at the front  delivering a lecture. This leads to little time for application of concepts. A professor's expertise is most beneficial to a student when they are applying what they are learning. The flipped classroom allows for this

The concept of a flipped classroom is simple:

At home students watch a lecture on a video or read to learn the new concept
This used to be done at school by a professor lecturing
At school students engage in activities to apply the new concept
This used to sometimes get done at home. But at home the student doesn't have access to the professor to ask questions and won't have other students easily available to participate in discussion, case studies or other experiential learning activities

I'm working on my flip

I began flipping my classes in Fall of 2009 with success (and a few bumps along the way).
Success to me this means my students like it, feel like they are learning the material and their grades have gone up.
To flip my classroom:
  • I learned how to create vodcasts using Camtasia for Mac
  • I learned how to write and lead case studies from Richard Ivey School of Business
  • I created a huge array of activities for my students to do in class

Because all of this takes time, some of my classes are still more of a baby summersault than a complete flip at this time.
In Fall of 2012, I designed and delivered a new elective from the ground up, Extreme Human Physiology, which was delivered as a fully flipped classroom. This course was a science class for students in non-science degree programs. I wanted them to get excited and not be intimidated by human physiology. This was one of the best teaching experiences I've ever had. From the feedback I received from students they thought so too!

Below is a brief reflection on video creation (thanks Andrew Ainsworth!).
